Viva Mexico! Remember the Alamo! Roll Tide!

So excited for what’s to come this week!
I’ve never been one of these grown kids attached to their parents.  Actually, I can admit I don’t see my family enough.  Shame on me, I know!
But, life is busy back home and has been for a decade…school, grad school, work, business trips, husband/wife time, homemaking…it can all lead to a pretty estranged relationship from family (save for the regular weekly calls to let them know I’m still alive).

Ever since Savannah was born, I’ve felt a giant tug of emotion back to not only my family, but to Adam’s family.  I feel a need for her to see both sides of the family regularly.  I talk to her about them, tell her where all of her family lives, how many cousins she has…

I so badly want Savannah to experience the big wonderful world full of adventures.  I want her to love to travel and explore, but I also want her firmly in touch with her roots.  I want her to know she has a solid foundation and a massive support system.  I want her to know what it’s like to see cousins and aunts & uncles and grandparents at the holidays.  I want her to know what it’s like to have conversations in Spanish with her maternal grandparents, I want her to eat sweet Southern food with her paternal grandparents.  I want her family to help develop who she is.

I’m a firm believer in understanding where you come from to know where you will go.  And…..OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

So, I am beyond…BEYOND…ecstatic that my parents are about to board a sleek Emirates direct flight from Houston to Dubai!
They arrive tomorrow.  We have so many neat things planned, but beyond the fancy meals and people watching at the big fancy Dubai malls, I am so looking forward to their sweet interaction.

I cannot wait for Savannah to hear her grandfather say funny things mixed with Spanish curse words at the sight of her.  I can’t wait to hear my mom clap her hands loudly and yell her name when she starts fussing (I’m sure, startling her…but that’s the way all Mexican babies get introduced to the world of loud families!).

This will be one of those weeks that will be with us for the rest of our lives.  This is the first time my parents have ever left the North American continent.  I’ve given my mom advice to pack nicotine lozenges for my chain-smoking, 70 yr old dad.  Their bags are packed (they’ve also packed us a few Tex-Mex goodies and teething toys for Savannah).
My camera is charging and I’m ready to start documenting Savannah’s first encounter with her family!

…so Savannah…Viva Mexico! Remember the Alamo! And Roll Tide!
(Yes, as a Tejana, you can yell Viva Mexico and Remember the Alamo - your family represents both...I'll explain later.)
