January 2002, Adam and I woke up one midweek morning and headed off to the Jefferson County, AL (Birmingham) courthouse with a mission...get ourselves a marriage license.
We had moved out of our dorm rooms just 1 month before this, but I suppose we decided "living in sin" wasn't for us, or we just got excited in the moment...I can't explain the exact reasoning.
I was 20, he was 21. There wasn't a whole lot of thinking things through at that time. We were just in love and it seemed like the right thing to do, even though we had only known each other for six months!
We didn't have wedding rings, so we borrowed some from the judge's secretary.
The judge gave us a quick chat about taking marriage seriously.
The secretary got a little teary-eyed as we recited our vows to each other. Our guest list? Can you count the judge's secretary as a guest? It seemed rude not to invite her since we had borrowed her rings.
Afterwards, we went for lunch at Bennigan's. He had a steak, I had a monte-cristo sandwich.
K-Mart was going through a bankruptcy at the time, so they had a close-out sale at the store by Bennigan's. We decided it would be a great time to search for wedding bands.
Adam has since replaced our wedding bands with nice proper rings, but I still sport my $50 K-Mart wedding band along with the new ones. I could never stop wearing it!
Needless to say, there would be no honeymoon. Heck, we had to go to work that afternoon (I was waiting tables at 11th Avenue Grill in central Birmingham's trendy South Side neighborhood, he had his shift delivering pizzas at Rocky's Pizza. Good times!)
We never felt like we missed something by not having a big wedding or not going on a honeymoon.
Our parents never openly freaked out the way we feared they would. Sure, they were concerned about our decision, but it was done and they figured everything would sort itself out.
It did :-)
Anyway, since we never had a honeymoon, we decided to make our last big trip before baby, August 2012, into a relaxing over-the-top babymoon!
We selected Phuket, Thailand's Anantara Resort. It was incredible! Very luxurious and relaxing. As I was already about 5 1/2 months pregnant, I wasn't really open to a lot of wild excursions, so we just laid around, enjoyed the view, swam and ate fantastic Thai food.
