The new much debated controversy in the US right now is that of the deal to hand over operations at six major sea ports to a Dubai-based company. Lawmakers from both parties are stirring up the issue in the media, trying to get President Bush to block the deal "until a thorough investigation is performed" to address security concerns.
The formerly British Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. was just acquired by Dubai-based Dubai Ports World. According to the White House, the ports deal was done by the books, and the company received all the necessary legal approvals. However, due to the UAE's links to terrorism according to the Dept. of Justice and the 9/11 Commission, President Bush is probably up for a new slump in the polls. Democrats are, of course, ecstatic over this. What a great way to score a point using the very same tactic Bush has been using: FEAR. "Ooooh.. the UAE is linked to terrorism; two 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE; terrorism money went through the UAE; the UAE recognized the Taliban as a legitimate government; etc." Yeah, why not. Freak the people out. The 2006 elections are around the corner.
The UAE? The United Arab Emirates? For God's sake! Heh, I don't think you could wish for a better ally in the region.
Okey. Six ports in NY, NJ, Philly, Baltimore, Miami, and New Orleans is indeed big deal, but give them a chance. It's not a brand new company's operation. Its fault is that it was just acquired by another company, which is a reputable one by the way.
Anyhow, if congress and media will go bananas over every such thing, then the US should probably stop signing economic treaties with the whole Muslim world. Most of the hijackers are Saudis. Kuwait was the ground for funding the attack on USS Cole according to Mish'al Aljarrah if he hasn't taken that back too. You can come up with as many examples as you want.
The debate is mounting, and it's going to be interesting to see how President Bush holds up as he's getting fire from both sides of the aisle. Let's see whether the deal goes through, or a new precedent will be set. A lawsuit has already been filed by a partner of the former British P&O company. If won, then DPW can definitely counter-sue since it's gone all by the books. So one could expect that if there's enough public outrage, and the courts can't block it, then congress will. It could be the newest clause on the new Patriot Act.
